The Challenge of the Project

This project posed a set of technical and data-integration challenges:

Maintaining high-frequency real-time air-quality updates without performance lag.
Integrating data from multiple environmental APIs (including EPA, AQICN, and OpenAQ) and unifying metrics for a consistent user experience.
Designing a responsive, map-centric interface capable of rendering global coverage while minimizing data load.
Implementing an accurate pollen forecast model that adjusts regionally and seasonally.

Ensuring data transparency, offline usability, and Apple Health Kit integration to enhance trust and health tracking.

Our Solution & Approach

Our team rebuilt the iOS architecture around Swift UI and Combine, ensuring efficient data-stream management and reactive updates. We designed a cleaner, modern UI that visualizes air-quality metrics (PM2.5, CO₂, NO₂, O₃, Pollen Index) through intuitive color-coded layers.

The app’s backend was optimized using asynchronous API aggregation, compressing data packets to reduce latency during global queries. A local caching system allows users to access their region’s last-known AQI even when offline. Integration with Health Kit and push notifications ensures users receive alerts during severe air-quality drops or allergy spikes.

We also refined the AQI and pollen index visualization, creating a real-time heatmap overlay and daily/weekly chart system for visual insights.
